The Solar Plexus Chakra

solar_plexusThe Solar Plexus Chakra is also called the Naval Center. Many people describe this Chakra as being at the belly button. You have to remember that symbolically the Chakras are located within or by the spinal column recognizing the path of the energy flows. While the area of the naval for this Chakra is correct in its height, it is toward the back of the body one must look to find the actual placement for this Chakra. It is this direct correlation with placement in or near the spinal column that allows for the theory of aligning your Chakras to increase health and personal well being.

Contrary to popular belief, it is the Solar Plexus Chakra that holds sway over the areas of emotion and feelings. Rather than representing who we are, this Chakra indicates how we feel. Focusing on the Solar Plexus Chakra can do much to help you maintain control in an emotional situation. Having temper problems? Try focusing on the energy of the Solar Plexus Chakra. Aligned with the long term Planet of Jupiter, the emotions represented by the Solar Plexus Chakra run deep to the inner core of the person.

A way to align with your Solar Plexus Chakra is to allow yourself to feel your emotions. Sometimes this is very frightening because emotions can be very powerful things and can overpower us. Grief is a prime example of an emotion that can be overpowering. With the Solar Plexus Chakra we’re talking about your “gut reaction.” Another focus for the Solar Plexus Chakra is that it is from there that our instinctive emotional responses emanate.

The color associated with the Solar Plexus Chakra is yellow. The Solar Plexus Chakra is sometimes referred to as the Naval Chakra. If you find yourself in an overly emotional situation and feel control slipping away, try a little mental imagery. It sounds silly, but stick with me here. Take a quick second to focus on your navel (some people rest their hand over the navel area), then mentally draw a line from your naval straight back to your spine. Once you reach the spine mentally put a warm orange glowing candle there. Focusing on the candle will allow its light to help you align your emotions in a more proper way. Practice this a few times at home, and with just the outward appearance of being wise enough to focus and take a moment before you speak, you are aligning your Naval Chakra to quell the emotional fear associated with speaking up! The old advice of counting to ten when angry is another way to help align your Solar Plexus or Naval Chakra.

Work with the Solar Plexus Chakra in private is also a great way to teach ourselves how we can better use the power and energy of our emotions in a positive way. Emotions run amok, just like anything else, can be destructive and painful. Excesses of emotion can be dangerous to both the psyche and the physical self, not to mention the spiritual self. Remember emotions are a part of us and as such are meant to be experienced, enjoyed and endured. They are the spice of life and are foremost meant to be felt!

The Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra is located below the navel. Some cultures call this the “Sex Center” or the “Sensual Chakra.” Located a little above the Root Chakra, the Sacral Chakra still speaks to the baser, or lower, essential parts of our selves. The sexual drive of mankind is inherent in the beast. Just watching a few commercials on the television exemplifies the adage of “sex sells.” Sex is a biological part of our nature and very much a part of who we are as natural beings. Many people who have been through a life- threatening experience are sexually aroused – at the very root of our being, the act of sexual union reaffirms our being alive.

Sexual Energy can come in many guises and in many ways. Accepting sensuality as a part of human nature is part of the message here. Even those that have taken vows of chastity are still recognizing their sensuality/sexuality by intentionally turning away from it. The Sacral Chakra is said to have direct energy lines with the larger systems of the body such as the adrenal system, muscular system, cells and their structure, reproductive system, and the motor centers of the brain. Hence, maintaining equilibrium with the Sacral Chakra will do much to help ensure physical well-being.

To connect with the Sacral Chakra, you may want to spend some time looking at the Zodiac signs of Aries and Scorpio. Also, the planet Mars has influence here so its associations should be looked at as well.

Some believe that the mere act of engaging in some form of sex act (making love, masturbation, etc.) will align the Sacral Chakra. Although there is some merit to the thought, it is mostly fallacy. Sacral Chakra energy, like all types of energy must be treated with respect. You don’t just reach in and grab a hold of the electrical wires in your home without turning off the breaker switch, right?

A recommendation for alignment of the Sacral Chakra and to help return balance is to work with the Sacral Energy in other forms. Sexual energy is not out of the question here by any means, but it is not the end all and be all of this Chakra. To truly align your Sacral Chakra focus on your body as a whole. By focusing on the body and keeping it healthy you are recognizing the value and worth. Any work that uses complex muscle systems (running, power walking, swimming, biking, hiking, etc.) will help to align the Sacral Chakra.

The main point is to be aware of the Sacral Chakra. Focus on the internal instinctive responses. The physical body that houses the spiritual essence must be maintained and kept healthy. By honoring your body (the act of sharing one’s body with another in a loving and uplifting way is honoring your body) you honor your inner self. With it’s rule over your vitality and energy of spirit, the Sacral Chakra is where to focus to gain those extra reserves when needed.

The Root Chakra

rootThe Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine. Also known as the sacral plexus it is related to the element of the earth. The Root speaks about our physical self and needs.  Many body systems/parts are said to be affected by the Root chakra.  When thinking about the root chakra, think about the things in/of your body required to survive. We can live without our gall bladders, but when they malfunction it can be disruptive to the whole body system.  Other very important parts of the body are best aligned working with the Root Chakra. Of course, the lumbar region of the spine (close to where the Charka is located), teeth and bones, kidneys and gall bladder, sweat glands, the ankles and the knees are all affected by the Root Chakra. The Root Chakra is most often represented as being red.  Further understanding of the Root Chakra can be found in studying the Zodiac signs of Capricorn and Aquarius. This Chakra is said to be aligned with the metal lead. Ruled by the planet Saturn, long range effects can come from working with (or, negatively – ignoring) the Root Chakra.

If you feel like you’re having difficulty connecting or remaining solid within yourself, working with the Root Chakra is said to help stabilize.  An easy exercise is to sit on the floor (a chair is okay if the floor is difficult for you).  Close your eyes and focus not on the skin, not on the muscles, but on the essence of you that resides in the Root Chakra.  Chakras are considered to be locations in our astral essence that we can connect with from the physical plane.

A friend describes how she connects with her Root Chakra this way.  “I sit on the floor and wrap my arms around my knees.  I usually burn a red candle – helps me to remember to focus on the Red Chakra (also known as the Root or Sacral Chakra).  Then I close my eyes and slowly rock backward and forward on my butt.  While I’m rocking I focus on the part of my body that remains in contact with the ground.  Once I’ve really got a good focus going, I focus on the color red and imagine positive energy, earth energy, coming up through the floor.  Normally after I do this I feel much more stabilized and stronger within myself.”  Well, when she told me about this, I thought it was a little kooky – 20 years ago.  After a particularly bad day I gave it a try.  WOW!  I couldn’t believe it.  It took less than five minutes and I felt better than I had all week.

The basic message of the Root Chakra is to maintain the inner workings of your physical body as you nurture your spirit.  Helping to keep your Chakras in proper alignment through meditation is a great way to take more control of your health and your life.
